Noncontrast-enhanced CT of the head is the preferred imaging modality over MRI. MRI is quite risky may miss faint calcification. Causes: Physiologic calcification Dystrophic calcification, particularly in the cerebral cortex, is seen following brain damage due to bacterial meningitis, encephalitis, hypoxic–ischaemic injury and, sometimes, following ischaemic stroke. Focal calcification is common in vascular abnormalities such as arteriovenous malformations and, less commonly, cavernomata. Calcification or calcium deposition can occur on these tumor masses. Aneurysms also cause calcium deposition in the brain. An aneurysm develops when an artery has a weak segment which triggers enlarging of the blood vessel. An aneurysm which is present in the brain starts to show calcification.

Calcification is the accumulation of calcium salts in a body tissue. It normally occurs in the formation of bone, but calcium can be deposited abnormally in soft tissue, causing it to harden. Calcifications may be classified on whether there is mineral balance or not, and the location of the calcification.
